Designers specialize in two main types of interior design, one that involves designing residential and the other, commercial properties.

Residential - Residential interior design focuses on the design, planning, budgeting, and purchasing and installation of furnishings in homes.

Commercial - Commercial interior design focuses on the design, planning, budgeting, specifying or purchasing of furnishings and installation of these for commercial, government or educational purposes.

Some designers also specialize in specific areas of commercial design such as entertainment complexes, healthcare institutions and restaurants and hotels.

What is Interior DesigningInterior design includes a scope of services to designing a space with a view protect and enhance the life, quality, health, and safety of the public. These services include:

Analyzing a client’s requirements and developing documents and drawings based on those needs.

Formulating preliminary plans, two and three-dimensional design concept studies that meets a client’s requirement and principles of interior design, as well as human behavior.

Confirming that design concepts are safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate and that they meet public health and safety.

Colors, finishes, and material suggested for use should meet the socio-psychological and functional needs of the proposed occupants and the life cycle performance, maintenance and environmental requirements of the area.

Preparation of project budgets and schedules.

Preparation of a construction document to illustrate non-structural/or non-seismic partition layouts; power and communications locations; reflected ceiling plan and lighting design; material and finishes; furniture layout and to adhere to regional building and fire codes, and municipal codes.

Monitoring the implementation of the project while in progress and upon completion, conducting post-occupancy evaluation reports.

Elements of Design:

Concept, color, proportion, balance, ergonomics, and function are the essential styles that together constitute a good design. All the above mentioned styles differ in their use, but form an integral part of the overall look and feel of a space. The seven elements of design are form, mass, shape, line, color, texture and pattern which creates and enhances the above mentioned styles.

Interior designers don’t typically impose their thoughts, ideas and tastes on a client; they work in coordination with the client to create a space that converges as closely as possible with the latter’s dreams, concepts and imagination. They visualize the project and illustrate the effects before it is actually executed.

Indeed, interior designing is not just a matter of good taste but also the application of different elements of design along with the personal vision of the client.
