What is Interior Designing
Interior designing is as much a scientific as an artistic process that enhances the appeal of a space and harmonizes the environment to suit the purpose for which it is intended. It adds meaning to a space by giving it a unique, personal touch. Interior design involves adding both creative and technical solutions to a structure in order to make it aesthetically appropriate and functional. It is a diverse, exciting and complex profession that draws inspiration from streams of knowledge spanning centuries, from modern architectural innovations to the ancient art of Feng Shui.
Contrary to a common misconception, there is a vast difference between interior design and interior decorating. Interior decorating is the art of decorating a room so that it looks aesthetic and functions well with the existing structure. It is focused on finishes such as wallpaper, paint, window coverings, and furnishings. It encompasses choosing furniture, fittings, and sculptures.
On the other hand, interior design involves the architectural integrity of an interior with a lifestyle experience through the study of human behavior and perception. Interior designers are valued because of their ability to have an impact on people’s lives by recreating the surroundings, in which they live, work and play.
There are several factors that play a vital role in a design solution. Some of these factors that govern the design of a space are mentioned below:
The dimension and construction of the space itself, keeping its potential and limitations in consideration
Purpose of usage of a space — whether it will be used for work or leisure, entertainment or worship, healing or learning.
Significance and personality of the space — power, authority, security, wisdom, achievement, playfulness or serenity.
Practical aspects to be taken into consideration such as ease of access, brightness and lighting factors, acoustics, seating and places to store or set things down.
Health and safety considerations.
